Eat Shit (and Die?)

You may not be aware of this, but chicken excrement is an increasingly favorite "food product" cattle farmers feed their cows. It's cheap and cows get fat from it. Of course, you may also get sick. There is a reason why, excepting the dung beetle and a few others, most creatures don't consume what others have expelled. In the case of poultry manure being used for feeding cattle, there is a risk of the cows ingesting campylobacteria and salmonella bacteria, intestinal parasites, veterinary drug residues and heavy toxic metals including arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury.

Until the late 90s ban on the use of slaughterhouse by-products that included blood, bones and viscera (intestines), about 75 percent of American cattle were fed slaughterhouse wastes. Regular livestock feed also included millions of cats and dogs euthanised at veterinary clinics and animal shelters. Bon appétit!
